One month in as the TC Marketing Intern
Meet Luke, our 2025 summer marketing intern, as he talks us through his first few weeks within the role.

Edinburgh Napier University Graduate Luke Fleming
From dissertation to desk
After starting on the 27th May 2025, the first month of my marketing internship has flown by. I studied Mass Communications, Advertising and Public Relations for four years at Edinburgh Napier, and practically as soon as my dissertation was handed in I jumped into working here. My time at Napier showed me I was really passionate about social media and its possibilities within marketing and communications, and I was excited to apply what I’d learnt to a practical, working environment. I’d worked on projects with real clients while at university, but this was my first time working directly within a company. I didn’t know what to expect – I’d never worked in an office before, much less in an accountant’s office.
Content and creativity
I hit the ground running on my first day, starting off by redesigning a poster to be used at the West Fife Show, then immediately being a fly on the wall for a marketing meeting. Over the course of the past month I’ve had a hand in designing and creating such a wide variety of content for TC. From social media posts, to a recruitment video, to even designing the booklet for our charity race night.

Part of the team
But graphic design is not the only thing I have been working on at Thomson Cooper. I’ve gotten the opportunity to sit in on a variety of meetings, such as the regular marketing meetings and website discussions. I’ve also been working on creating a timeline of Thomson Cooper’s history in celebration of our 75th year. Anyone who’s walked past my desk in the past few weeks may have noticed the giant cardboard box sitting beside me, and when I’ve not been scouring the web for fun accountancy facts to include (Did you know Mick Jagger trained as an accountant?), I’ve been digging through this box to find significant dates and events. At times, I’ve felt a bit like Indiana Jones.
Connecting with the past
While my work on the timeline is still far from over, I wanted to end this blog by showing some of the interesting things I’ve found in the box. Firstly, in a booklet labelled “brochures etc” I found an old Thomson Cooper branded mouse mat. I’ve also found three TC branded pens, the oldest of which being at least 25 judging by the “1999” printed on it. I’ve also found a photocopy of a letter sent by Thomson Cooper dating from 1965, in which a client is asked a series of questions on their visit to “the Soviet Union”.

So far, I’ve been really enjoying my time at Thomson Cooper. While I don’t know much about accounting per se, I’m glad to have found a friendly working environment that lets me utilise my marcomms skills. I’m about halfway through my internship, and preparations for the 75th Anniversary event are beginning to pick up speed. I can tell the weeks ahead are going to be busy, but I am excited to see what new challenges they bring.
