Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2023

To celebrate Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2023 we had a chat with one of our apprentices Lee Duncanson.

He joined us last year having recently left school. Lee was contemplating a course at a local college, however a visit to the Apprenticeships.scot website turned out to be the first step in his accounting career journey.

How long have you worked at Thomson Cooper? 6 Months.

How did you hear about the apprenticeship? – I saw the apprenticeship on the Apprenticeships.scot website and took it from there.

What were you doing before joining Thomson Cooper? – I had left school prior to joining Thomson Cooper and was on track to join a Business Law course at Fife College when I heard about the apprenticeship.

What have been the biggest challenges so far? – The biggest challenge during my time at Thomson Cooper has been adapting to working life. Going from school it was a big difference and took some time to adjust to the hard work and longer hours.

What have been the benefits? – Working at Thomson Cooper has been a great experience and has taught me a variety of different skills from problem solving, communication skills, further developed my IT skills and overall has helped me develop my confidence and self-motivation. It is an “Earn As You Learn” Scheme which makes the motivation just that little bit easier.

What plans do you have for the future? –  Upon the completion of my apprenticeship I aspire to further develop my skills, knowledge and ability around my job role before preparing myself to sit a CIPP (Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals) Exam/Course which will allow me to become a qualified payroll professional.
