Internship at Thomson Cooper

As part of my degree, I have just spent 12 months at Thomson Cooper on placement. Looking back on my experience here, I am extremely grateful that the Firm accepted my application. The experience has truly been invaluable.

Working within a smaller firm I have been exposed to all core areas of accounting and I have grasped all the fundamental skills and knowledge that comes with this.

Bookkeeping, Payroll and Accounting Software

I started off working in the Business Support Services Department, where I picked up basic bookkeeping skills and was involved in the processing of payroll and the preparation of VAT Returns. I worked using various accounting software such as Sage, Xero and Freeagent.

Accounts Preparation and Tax Returns

I went on to become involved in the preparation of sole trader and limited company accounts, as well as self-assessment Tax Returns. I received on the job training and was fully supported by the accounts team who were happy to help and explain anytime that I needed assistance. With the Edinburgh office being smaller I felt more confident and able to approach staff in other departments.

Insolvency and Audit Visits

I was also given the opportunity to spend time in the Dunfermline office and receive an insight into the Insolvency department, as well as being involved in the Audit team and experience first-hand going out to clients’ premises and performing fieldwork.

Culture at Thomson Cooper

Adapting to the different departments was challenging but it was all a fantastic learning experience and it was made easier by all staff and partners being so welcoming and understanding of my requirement to learn.

I would recommend anyone looking to pursue a career in accountancy to apply to Thomson Cooper. Whether it be for an internship, graduate job or experienced hire I know that the firm’s pragmatic approach to training and developing its staff will provide you with all the necessary expertise to become a valuable member of the team.

Thank you!

After 13 months at Thomson Cooper, it’s time for me to go back to Uni to complete my degree. I just wanted to say a genuine massive thank you to everyone across the firm. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time spent in all departments and you have all been so welcoming and patient with me. I’ve made good friends and always had such a laugh at the staff outings, I will be sure to keep in touch.
