A Trainee Accountant’s First Impressions at Thomson Cooper

Sep 23, 2017 | TC blog

We asked Jack Laird, Trainee Accountant, how he found his first month working at Thomson Cooper. Luckily he’d kept a journal, so was able to give us a true flavour of his first impressions.

Before I started at Thomson Cooper, I was a little worried that my first weeks and months would be spent doing repetitive tasks while I learned the ropes, with no opportunity to really get involved in the work. Once I started, however, I quickly realised that this wasn’t the case.

By the end of my first week, I had had more exposure to the work than I could ever have expected. Before long, I was putting together full sets of accounts, and the diversity of businesses and clients that I worked on in just my first month was remarkable.

The amount of autonomy I was given came as a nice surprise. I feel I have been trusted with a lot of responsibility to Thomson Cooper and to the clients, which is very rewarding. It makes me feel I’m having a positive impact, and that what I do really matters.

I’ve been made to feel welcome, and a valuable member of the team, from when I first sat at my desk. Everyone, from the staff to the partners, is always happy to help and lend their expertise.

Every single day I’m given opportunities to build my skills, and learn from a team of experts, in an excellent work culture. This is really important to me, and I feel very lucky and proud to be part of what happens at Thomson Cooper.

This sort of feedback is great to hear, and we’re sure Jack has embarked on a successful career in accountancy.
